Thursday September 11th - Botswana at last!

We had a nice surprise today… we flew business class from Johannesburg to Maun Botswana!  WOW how nice it was!

Our journey to Botswana was incredible, business class to Maun, then a very small Cessna type plane from Maun to the Pom Pom airstrip, then a 5 minute jeep ride to the Okavango Delta.  Next we had a 30 minute boat ride to the Xaranna (Pronounced karana) Tent Camp, our home for the next two days.

OMG Botswana is spectacular!!! It is incredibly beautiful here!  It is possibly our second favorite place in the world!  I am searching for the right words to describe the beauty, pictures are worth a thousand words!

WiFi is not that great here so you will have to wait for more photos: (

We are staying in a very small “tented” camp, OK, it is rated as a 5 star camp!  …and it deserves its rating!  Each “tent” has an indoor and an outdoor shower, private swimming pool and luxury amenities.  They have WiFi!!!!  And the food and wine have been spectacular!

This is our private swimming pool!

This place is incredible!  The camp has 8 tents for guest and we are staying in tent 6, at the moment we are the furthest away from the camp.  It really gives you a feeling of being alone out in the wilderness.

We went out on an incredible game drive tonight, you just can’t believe the beauty we are seeing.  We saw to baby elephants playing together while the adults were eating.  We also went to a hyena den and saw juveniles watching after the babies… OMG the babies were adorable

This IS the real Africa!  Once the sun goes down we are not allowed to walk to our tent on our own, for our safety we must be accompanied by a staff member who is familiar with the animals.  For example after our game drive this evening, we got back to the camp and an elephant decided to settle down between the boat dock and our tent, so we had to take an alternative route back to our tent.  Animals definitely have the right of way here!

We are sitting in our tent, looking out over the delta and see a perfect moon!  OMG, this is so beautiful!

One hour after the last guest goes to bed the generators are turned off and the camp is dark and without electricity!  They have emergency horns for each guest to use if the need should arise!  Yes, it is beautiful here, but it is also VERY dangerous!

Elephants came into the camp while we were sleeping and started fighting, the roaring was so loud it woke everyone up.  The camp has guards on duty 24x7 to ensure our protection… not from people, but the wildlife.

  1. Wow, this place sounds fantastic, and wild. Really a great experience. That little airplane you flew in looks like a model rather than the real thing. How did the pilot fit in? I might have a hard time sleeping in all that wildness. But I guess I could hide in the shower, or the pool. Really looking forward to the next pictures!

  2. Except for all the wild life roaming about, your tent gives new meaning to the term "roughing it"!!!
    Be careful out there!
