Another nine hour flight back on our new favorite airline, Emirates.
We arrived in Cape Town, we are staying at the Taj in downtown Cape Town, very nice 5 star hotel… making up for being homeless the last couple of days :^)
Our room in Cape Town for two days:
So far South Africa isn’t like being in Africa at all. Cape Town is a very nice city of 5 million people on the coast, even the locals say it is not the “real” Africa. Food has been great and the wine is fabulous! It is the beginning of Spring in South Africa and it is cold, today’s high is expected to be 67 degrees, we are not prepared for this cool of weather.
Today, now Wednesday, we had a busy day of sightseeing on the Cape Town Peninsula. The coast is spectacular, beautiful high cliffs and turquoise water. We took a short boat ride out to seal rock where a few thousand seals call home. The water is very cold, clear and has a lot of kelp.
We had a beautiful drive to the Light House at Cape Point which is the tip of Africa where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet, we watched a southern right whale off the coast and enjoyed a scenic walk around the light house grounds.
On our way back from the light house we saw South African Bonetebok and Baboons
Next stop Boulder Beach and a visit with the African Penguins otherwise know as the “Jack Ass Penguins”, yes that’s right, I got to see penguins today!!! Yippee!! They are cute little buggers, we got to see a baby (still nesting under mamma) and several “teenagers” and lots of adults.
The weather was perfect today, so we got to experience a Cable car ride to the top of Table Mountain. This was definitely an “E ticket ride"
Fun facts we learned today:
- Cape Town claims to have the second largest gay population, second to San Francisco. No issues here for us! :^)
- If you get stung by a scorpion, you need to find the little bugger that stung you, squish him and make a paste out of him, put the paste on the sting mark. The scorpion has a natural anti-venom and this will stop the poison going through your body. Nice to know, but hope we never need this little tidbit.
I think we are finally adjusting to the time change and getting over the travel, it’s a good thing because we are on the move again tomorrow. Flying to Johannesburg then to Richards Bay, then driving to Zulu Nyala where we will spend the next 6 days in two different camps. Let the safari begin!
